Vol. 265 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gluten-Free Foods.

37.

asked the Minister for Health if any progress has been made in having imported gluten-free food for coeliacs relieved of tariff duties.

The Ministers authorised to grant duty-free licences for the importation of gluten-free foods are the Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries and Industry and Commerce. From inquiries I have made it is the practice to issue licences for the duty-free importation of such goods from the United Kingdom and Canada. However, I understand that, due to contractual obligations, an element of duty must be paid on imports from other countries. The duty charged in such cases is not, however, very significant.
