Vol. 265 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Doctor Shortage.

47.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the shortage of doctors in remote rural areas; and if he is satisfied that the present incentive schemes to attract doctors to these areas are satisfactory.

The information which I have received from health boards would not indicate that there is, in general, a shortage of doctors in remote rural areas. There are a small number of centres which require a better service and, in these cases, the health boards concerned are continuing to advertise for doctors. Experience in recent months would indicate that it is becoming easier to fill such posts.

The existing incentive arrangements seem to be normally adequate as respects such areas.
