Vol. 265 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - One Parent Families.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the number of one-parent families in the State and the total number of children in these families.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available but I can give the Deputy a rough indication, though one which is somewhat out-of-date, which is derived from the 1961 census of population. At that time there were 26,294 schedules returned relating to families where only one parent was recorded as being present on census night and where there was at least one child under 14 years of age. There were, in all, 58,827 children under 14 on these schedules. These figures include, of course, instances where one parent was temporarily absent on census night. At the same time they do not include other instances where a one-parent family may have been living with another family.
