Vol. 265 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shipping Tonnages.

5.

asked the Taoiseach the tonnage of shipping entering and leaving the ports of the State in 1971 and 1972; and the tonnage in each year of Irish registered ships entering and leaving.

Data on shipping activity are collected only in respect of arrivals of vessels. The total net registered tonnage of vessels which arrived at Irish ports in 1972, including vessels in the coastal trade, was 24.51 million; arrivals relating to Irish registered vessels accounted for 2.22 million of this total. The corresponding figures for 1971 were 24.11 million and 2.30 million.

In compiling the figures a vessel calling at one or more ports is recorded as an arrival at each of these ports and repeated voyages for the same vessel are included.
