Vol. 265 No. 3

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

372.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the provision of a telephone kiosk at Naul, County Dublin.

The call office telephone at Naul sub-Post Office is little used and the provision of a street kiosk there is not contemplated at present. The matter will, however, be reconsidered if there is significant increase in the users of the call office.

373.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he intends to take action to improve the telephone service in the Skerries, County Dublin, area.

Additional trunk circuits and special equipment are being provided to improve the service at Skerries. It is hoped the work will be completed within two months.

374.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider the erection of a telephone kiosk at Santry village, County Dublin.

Santry village is served by a call office in the sub Post Office and by two existing kiosks in the area. None of these is extensively used. It is accordingly not proposed to provide a kiosk at present but the matter will be kept under review.

375.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider the erection of a telephone kiosk at Ard na Meala, Ballymun, Dublin.

The area in question is regarded as adequately served by public telephones at Ballymun Shopping Centre and at Joseph Plunkett and Thomas Clarke Towers. The provision of additional public telephone facilities in the area is not considered warranted at present. The matter will be kept under review.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs in view of the urgent need for proper and necessary telephone services within the area covered by the new housing complex in Ballybrack, Co. Dublin, what action he intends taking in the matter.

I assume the Deputy's question relates to public telephone facilities in the Ballybrack area. There is an existing street telephone kiosk in Ballybrack village which, I understand, is not extensively used and indeed is barely paying its way. Under existing criteria, the provision of an additional public telephone in the Ballybrack area would not be warranted. The matter will be reconsidered if demand for the existing facilities shows a significant further increase.

376.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the substantial growth of population in the Ashlawn Park, Oakton Park, Ralahine and Gallagher estate areas of Ballybrack, County Dublin, he will arrange for the extension of the public telephone kiosk servicing in the area.

377.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the substantial growth of population in the Clonkeen Crescent, Pottery Road industrial estate and McIntosh Park areas, he will site a public telephone kiosk in the McIntosh Park area of Cabinteely, County Dublin.

The areas in question are served by existing telephone kiosks—at Johnstown Road, Abbey Road and Dean's Grange Cross—which are not extensively used. Provision of an additional telephone kiosk in the general area is not regarded as warranted at present. The matter will be reconsidered if demand for the existing facilities shows a significant increase.

378.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the locations of the telephone kiosks which it is intended to erect during the coming year.

The kiosk programme for 1973-74 provides for the erection of kiosks at the 242 locations indicated on the lists attached. It is not possible however to guarantee in respect of any of the locations that a kiosk will be provided before 31st March, 1974, as difficulties may arise with regard to site selection, local authority consent, etc.
