Vol. 265 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Visitors Medical Services.

2.

asked the Minister for Health if he will indicate the medical services and facilities which this country will have to provide for visiting or short-stay residents of other EEC countries.

Under EEC Regulations for the social security of migrant workers which came into effect in this country on 1st April last, insured workers or social security pensioners, with their dependants, on a temporary visit to this country are entitled, free of charge, to medical services at hospital and general practitioner level which are required urgently. These services are provided by our authorities on behalf of those in the country where the person is or was insured: that country meets the cost of the services.

Would the Minister indicate what proof or evidence must the visitor have that he is an insured worker?

I assume the same procedure would apply as in this country in respect of people going abroad—they will get clearance from their own health board as to their entitlement.
