Vol. 265 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Library.

12.

asked the Minister for Education when a decision will be taken on the siting and construction of the new National Library.

Mr. R. Burke

The advice tendered to me favours the development of the National Library in the Kildare Street area. Feasibility studies in this regard are in train. As I indicated in my reply to a question on 10th May, 1973, measures to alleviate the accommodation difficulties of the National Library are at present in train, and the necessary decisions in the matter will be taken as soon as practicable.

Could the Minister say if it has been decided to drop the Donnybrook site for the library?

Mr. R. Burke

A decision has not been taken to drop it. That stage in the negotiations has not been reached yet.

It may well still go on that site?

Mr. R. Burke

It may very well.

Is it true that there were proposals to site the new National Library on the former site of UCD, Earlsfort Terrace?

Mr. R. Burke

The position is, as Deputies are aware, that there are many possibilities before us. We have not reached any stage of decision yet. We are examining all possibilities.

And the Minister will bear in mind keeping it where it is?

Mr. R. Burke

May I say that I am predisposed to leave it where it is?
