Vol. 265 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Joint Fishery Development.

51.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will outline the proposals for joint fishery development with Japanese and local interests.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that a Japanese firm have had discussions with them about the possible development in this country of an industry based on the processing and export of food products including sea-fish, but that no concrete proposal has so far emerged.

Is it not true that the Japanese firm have already issued a public statement in Japan, a statement which was published in the Irish papers, and how is it we are not in a position to either go along with that statement or to deny it?

It is true the Japanese firm issued this statement, but it was issued without consultation with us and before any concrete proposals were agreed.

If the Parliamentary Secretary could avoid covering his microphone we might be able to hear him much better.

This firm issued this statement, but it was issued in advance of any concrete proposals being agreed with our Department.
