Vol. 265 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lebanon Situation.

59.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the attitude the Government propose to take at the UN in regard to the troubles in the Lebanon.

The situation in the Lebanon is, of course, particularly the concern of the Government of that county and it would be for them to decide whether to bring the question before the Security Council, which has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security and of which Ireland is not a member, or before the General Assembly when it convenes on 18th September next. They have not so far indicated an intention of doing so. Our attitude would be determined if and when the question comes before the United Nations. The Government support, of course, the Security Council resolution of 21st April last deploring acts of violence in the Lebanon and condemning attacks on that country.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
