asked the Minister for Education if he will state in relation to his statement that he will improve the pupil/teacher ratio in national schools (1) the cost to the Exchequer for extra teachers' salaries and (2) the cost of new buildings to accommodate the extra classes which will be involved.

On the basis of the current rates of salaries the net cost of the salaries of the additional teachers is estimated at £355,000 in the present financial year. It is estimated that necessary additional accommodation will cost £360,000.
