Vol. 265 No. 12

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Foot Patrols.

13.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider increasing Garda foot patrols in Dublin city.

In 1972, following a comprehensive review by the Garda research and planning unit of the foot patrol system in the Dublin metropolitan area, new foot patrol arrangements were introduced in each district in the area. The new arrangements involve considerably more foot patrolling and the position now is that a definite number of men is on foot patrol duty in each district at all times.

The Commissioner of the Garda Síochána considers that the present level of foot patrolling is reasonably adequate in all the circumstances but the situation will be kept under review.

Will the Minister agree that the greatest deterrent to the type of vandalism under discussion today is the man on the beat?

I quite agree, and that is why the system of foot patrols has been reintroduced and augmented.
