Vol. 265 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Taxation Office.

11.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider opening another motor taxation office to serve the southern part of Dublin city as the congestion and delay at the present office is increasing rapidly.

The opening of a second motor taxation office in the Dublin area is a matter for decision by the licensing authority in the first instance.

(Dublin Central): Is the Minister aware that there are considerable delays in the Motor Taxation Office in this city and that the facilities available are not adequate to deal with the big volume of business transacted there? Would he consider instructing the authority to open an additional office, preferably on the south side of the city?

I sympathise with the Deputy's point of view but, unfortunately, I have no authority to instruct the corporation to open a new office. However, I will bring the Deputy's comments to their notice because I think something should be done in regard to this matter.

(Dublin Central): Another matter which the Minister might consider is having the tax office open during the hours 7 to 9 p.m. There are many people who, because they are working during the day, do not find it possible to go to the tax office, which at present opens only during the hours 9.15 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

That has been the position for a long time. I agree that it is unreasonable and I suggest that Dublin Corporation take notice of it.

The Minister will have to stop that.

Is the Minister not aware that there is a greatly increased number of cars in Dublin as a result of the prosperity generated by the previous Government?

Is the Deputy suggesting that there have been many more since the 14th March last?

Deputy Haughey will have to give Deputy Lemass his supplementaries as well as his questions.

In view of the indignation and outrage that is caused to decent, law-abiding citizens, would the Minister endeavour to ensure that people going into the motor taxation office do not have parking tickets on their cars when they come out?

That is a matter for Dublin Corporation.
