Vol. 265 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Bus Drivers.

8.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give a full driver's licence under Classes A to D inclusive to school bus drivers who have an A & E licence, which does not entitle them to drive a motor car.

While existing regulations do not provide for what the Deputy suggests, I hope to review the matter in conjunction with EEC proposals for the harmonising of all aspects of the driver licensing code.

It seems strange to me that people who are eligible to drive school buses which carry 40 children do not qualify to drive their own cars.

The Deputy must be aware that, if these people applied for driving licences for private cars, they would almost certainly qualify; but if they do not apply we cannot make any regulation that will allow them to obtain a licence without subjecting themselves to a test. While I have sympathy with the idea, we cannot make exceptions for such people.
