Vol. 266 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Voting Card Addresses.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the wrong address was given on the voting cards for the polling station in the Monkstown, County Dublin area during the recent Presidential election and that the facilities were very poor within the relocated station; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The selection of premises for voting purposes is a matter for the local returning officer. I understand that St. Patrick's School, Monkstown was used as a polling place at the Presidential election for the first time. The polling cards sent to electors referred in error to the former polling premises. The error came to light before polling day and the local returning officer posted a notice at the former polling premises directing electors to the new building. I understand that the premises are across the road from one another and that little inconvenience was caused. I understand that the reason for the change was that the facilities in St. Patrick's School are better.

Is this the new polling station the Minister is speaking about?

I do not know. It refers here to the one at St. Patrick's School so I presume it is the new one.

I should like to say that the condition of these premises is appalling.

I should like the Deputy to ask a question, not make a statement.

I should like to point out to the Minister that conditions in the so-called new polling station are absolutely deplorable. Is the Minister aware that the lead-up to this polling station, some 30 yards in length, would be better placed in a farmyard, that the conditions in the polling station were absolutely deplorable, especially toilet and washhand facilities?

I am not so aware but I will bring the Deputy's comments to the notice of the returning officer.

I would be glad if the Minister would do that.

Who appointed the returning officer?

The Minister would not know that.
