Vol. 266 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Payers.

39.

asked the Minister for Finance the estimated amount per head of the population to be raised by way of taxation for the year 1973-74; and the actual figure for 1972-73.

The total amount received in taxation per head of population for the year 1972-73 is provisionally estimated at £230 and the amount projected for 1973-74 is £265 per head.

Of the estimated increase of £35 between last year and 1973-74, £24 is attributable to buoyancy of revenue arising mainly from higher income and expenditure levels. The balance of £11 represents the net taxation increases announced in the budget plus the rise in the social welfare contributions.

Total taxation, which is customarily defined as in the national accounts, comprises taxes on income, including social insurance contributions, taxes on expenditure, including rates, and taxes on capital.
