Vol. 266 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo School.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance the position regarding a new central Protestant School at Collooney, County Sligo; the reasons for the delay in having it erected; and when work on it is expected to start.

Mr. Kenny

I am advised that because of the time which it took to furnish evidence of title to the site selected for this school a grant towards its erection could be sanctioned only in February last. Arrangements are now in hand for the preparation of the necessary plans and specification. The case will be expedited as much as possible but it is still too early to say when work is likely to start.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of the urgency of having this school provided? Does the Parliamentary Secretary know that due to the typical messy actions of the previous Government Skreen and Ballymote Protestant schools were closed down and that the children were transported to Collooney where adequate provision had not been made to accommodate them? As a result of this there is severe overcrowding in the school.

Mr. Kenny

I am aware from the Deputy's speech this morning that this is the case. However, this is a matter for the Department of Education and when the Office of Public Works, acting as their agents, gets sanction for this assignment it will be carried out expeditiously.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary consider the erection of a pre-fab at this school?

Mr. Kenny

It will be considered, and if it is found necessary, and essential, it will be proceeded with.
