102.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephones installed in the Walkinstown area of Dublin during the period from 1st October, 1972, to March, 1973.

I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 100, 101 and 102 together.

There are approximately 2,140 orders on hand from the Walkinstown area of which about 700 are having attention at present. Priority has to be given to the clearance of pre-1973 applications, of which 700 remain, made up as follows:

Year of Application

Number of Orders

1970

50

1971

180

1972

470

There is a shortage of equipment in the local exchange. Additional exchange equipment to fill the existing exchange building was installed recently and a major new exchange to serve the area is in course of installation. It is due to be in service in May, 1974. A substantial amount of cabling work, mainly for new housing estates, is in hand or proposed. It will be a considerable time before the accumulated back-log of waiting orders is cleared but it is expected that all but perhaps a small number who may be, affected by exceptional underground cabling difficulties will be attended to within the next 12 months or so.

About 690 telephones were installed in the Walkinstown exchange area in the period 1st October, 1972, to 31st March, 1973. The number of new applications for telephones from the area in the same period was 938.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say if, while this backlog is being dealt with, people having small businesses, such as hairdressers, will be given priority over ordinary domestic connections?

I am sure that in regard to these installations, factors relating to the applicant's business will be taken into consideration.

103.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of people on the waiting list for telephones in the Blanchardstown area of Dublin.

104.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when applicants on the waiting list for telephones in the Blanchardstown area of Dublin will be supplied with them.

I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 103 and 104 together. There are approximately 500 applications for telephone lines on hands from the Blanchardstown Exchange area, of which about 190 are having attention at present and a further 60 will be cleared progressively over the next six months as cables become available. There is a shortage of equipment in the Blanchardstown exchange. Interim relief has been arranged for later this year and major extensions of the exchange are expected to be completed in 1975. A substantial amount of cabling work is necessary, mainly for new housing estates in the area. It is hoped to clear all pre-1973 applications within the next 12 months.
