Vol. 266 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Kiosks.

105.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a telephone kiosk for the residents of Oldcourt, Tallaght, County Dublin.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Oldcourt where there is no post office is not envisaged under the present rural kiosk programme.

It does not arise directly but, perhaps, the Parliamentary Secretary would say if he has any proposals whereby a different type of public telephone might be installed to reduce the element of vandalism that is experienced?

I am sorry. I have no information.

I understand that it is not possible to provide a telephone kiosk in a rural area where no post office exists, is that correct?

Under the present programme, that would be correct, yes.

Then I take it that despite the fact that Tallaght is such a developing area, the place mentioned in the question, Oldcourt, which is a rural district where quite a number of people live, has no hope of being provided with a telephone at the present moment?

Of course, there is no post office and, although the Deputy says there are a large number of persons living in the area, my information is that there are 26 council cottages there.

106.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange to have a public telephone kiosk provided at Howth Summit.

The question of providing a telephone kiosk at Howth Summit is being examined and I will communicate with the Deputy when the result is available.

107.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange to have a public telephone kiosk provided on the pier at Howth in the vicinity of the Yacht Club for the use of the fishermen.

There is already a kiosk at one end of the pier, which, unfortunately, has not been paying its way. In these circumstances, while I sympathise with the Howth fishermen in their desire for more convenient facilities I do not feel that I can arrange for an additional kiosk in this area, without some unfairness to other areas, some of which have a better case, and still have to wait. The situation will be kept under review.

108.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange to provide a public telephone kiosk at Corcaghan, County Monaghan.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Corcaghan where there is no post office is not envisaged under the present rural kiosk programme but it is proposed to provide a kiosk in replacement of the call office at the neighbouring sub-post office at Stranooden.

109.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will erect a telephone kiosk at Mucklagh, County Offaly.

Provision of kiosks in places such as Mucklagh where there is no post office is not envisaged under the present rural kiosk programme but it is expected that a kiosk will be provided within the next 12 months in replacement of the call office telephone at Screggan sub-post office which is less than half a mile from Mucklagh.

Questions Nos. 110, 111, 112 and 113, postponed.

114.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider erecting a telephone kiosk at Rathmore, near Athboy, County Meath.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Rathmore where there is no post office is not envisaged under the present rural kiosk programme.

115.

Mr. Lynch

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if a telephone kiosk will be provided in the Merchant's Road, East Wall, Dublin area at an early date.

Provision of a kiosk in the area mentioned which is already served by kiosks, about quarter mile away, at Church Road and at the entrance to the docks, is not considered to be warranted.
