Vol. 266 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alcohol Advertisements.

134.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the increase of alcoholism among teenagers, he will consider either banning alcohol advertisements on radio and TV or allowing, free of charge, advertisements showing the dangers of alcohol.

My only function in regard to advertising on Radio Teleffs Eireann is under section 20, subsection (3) of the Broadcasting Authority Act, 1960, which provides that the total daily time for broadcasting advertisements and the distribution of that time throughout the programmes is subject to the approval of the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs.

I am aware that a revised code dealing with advertising of alcoholic liquor was adopted last year following agreement reached by a committee representing brewing, distilling and advertising interests. The code was directed towards achieving restraint and responsibility in such advertisements. RTE inform me that they are adhering to this code.

Questions Nos. 135 to 137, inclusive, postponed.
