Vol. 266 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo School Proposals.

44.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received a letter from the parents of children attending Swinford boys' national school. County Mayo; and if he will state his proposals for this school.

Mr. R. Burke

I have received a letter from the parents of children attending Swinford Boys' National School, and have sent a reply.

It has been decided to erect a new national school for boys in Swinford. The school will comprise four classrooms and a general purposes room. Preliminary arrangements for the erection of the new school have already been made, and a grant towards the cost will be sanctioned on receipt of satisfactory evidence of title to the site, which has been approved.

Is the Minister aware this matter has been with the Department for four years? Is he aware that because of the severe overcrowding some pupils have to attend school in a room shared by another educational establishment? Would he see that the erection of this school proceeds as quickly as possible.

Mr. R. Burke

I will see that the works proceed as quickly as possible. I am fully aware of the circumstances, of the urgent need to provide new accommodation, for boys particularly. I am also aware of the amount of work put into this project by the primary branch.
