Vol. 267 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emergency Telephone Service.

54.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will outline the extensions that have taken place to the 999 telephone service.

At the beginning of 1972 the `999' emergency service was available at 112 automatic exchanges. Since then it has been extended to 291 other exchanges and is now available to about 99 per cent of subscribers on the automatic system. Eight more exchanges are expected to have the facility by the end of the year leaving a balance of three small exchanges at which the equipment must be replaced before the `999' service can be introduced.

At least we have left something of which the Minister approves.
