Vol. 267 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

39.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received a request from Dublin Corporation to increase the present income limit of £1,600 for the higher education grants scheme which was set in 1972; if it is his intention to acquiesce in this request and, if so, by how much he proposes to adjust the various scales; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Mr. R. Burke

I have received a request of that nature from the Dublin Corporation and I would refer the Deputy to the reply I gave the House on the 22nd May, 1973, in relation to the income levels concerned.

Would the Minister state, for the convenience of the House, what the reply was?

Mr. R. Burke

The levels of income in the scheme of grants under the Local Authorities (Higher Educational Grants) Act, 1968, were raised last year. No further raising of the level is contemplated at present.

Would the Minister state why not in view of the fact that the limit has been removed, for example, for medical insurance, national insurance, et cetera? Why can the limit here not also be raised?

Mr. R. Burke

I do not contemplate any change at present but that does not mean there will not be a change in the next financial year.

Is there a sort of ready reckoner available from the Minister's Department on this question of grants and income?

Mr. R. Burke

I understand the situation is that the income limit is £1,600 and that the stages of increase are in steps of £135. It is tied to a means test.

I think it would help the Dáil if the Minister could circulate a document which sets out the position.

Mr. R. Burke

I will certainly do that.
