Vol. 267 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Science and Technology Co-operation.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance the nature and effect of and discussions that have taken place between this country and the European Committee on Co-operation in Science and Technology, with particular reference to pollution, telecommunications, transport, information, science, meteorology and oceanography.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance if any reports have been received from the committee of CERD with regard to determining research and development objectives and priorities in the fields of science and technology.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance if any steps have been taken by the Government to define objectives and to pursue a common policy in the field of science and technology which will be co-ordinated within the institutions of the EEC.

I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 10, 11 and 12 together.

Information on Ireland's involvement with the European Committee on Co-operation in Science and Technology, known as COST, or CERD, and on the elaboration of a common policy for science and technology is contained in the six monthly report on developments in the European Communities presented to the Houses of the Oireachtas in May last. There have been no significant developments since then.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance the plans he has to achieve international technological co-operation.

The achieving of international technological co-operation is, obviously, not a matter for isolated action by one country alone. We are, however, contributing to such co-operation by our involvement in the scientific and technological activities of various bodies such as the European Communities, OECD, the Council of Europe, the Conference of West European Science Research Councils and the United Nations through their various agencies, for example, UNESCO and the Economic Commission for Europe.
