Vol. 267 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coast Erosion.

27.

asked the Minister for Finance when the problem of coast erosion adjacent to the Church of Ireland, Ballycotton, County Cork, will be dealt with.

Mr. Kenny

The responsibilities of the Commissioners of Public Works in regard to coast protection are derived solely from the Coast Protection Act, 1963. Under this Act proposals for coast protection are initiated by the local authority. While a number of coast protection proposals have been referred to the commissioners by the Cork County Council, including one affecting an area about a mile north of Ballycotton, none has been received in respect of the area adjacent to the Church of Ireland, Ballycotton.

It is clearly a case for Divine intervention.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make adequate provision for dealing with the coast erosion problems at Garryvoe, Ballycotton, Ballycrenane, County Cork.

Mr. Kenny

A proposal under the Coast Protection Act, 1963, has been received from Cork County Council by the Commissioners of Public Works affecting the Garryvoe-Ballycrenane area, Ballycotton. It will not be possible to say if a scheme under the Act will be feasible until a preliminary examination has been carried out and this will be done as soon as staff resources permit.

29.

asked the Minister for Finance the projects being carried out by the Office of Public Works in relation to coastal erosion.

Mr. Kenny

Under the Coast Protection Act, 1963, coast protection schemes are in progress at Front Strand, Youghal, County Cork and Rossnowlagh, County Donegal.

Is there any possibility of increasing the expert staff that would be required to speed up this coast erosion programme?

This seems to be a separate question.

Mr. Kenny

I think the reply to Question No. 31 will answer that.
