Vol. 267 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - International Monetary System.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if there is any evidence that a stable international monetary system may soon be achieved.

The future behaviour of the international monetary system depends on a wide range of evolving factors and interactions regarding which precise evidence cannot be available in advance.

I would point out, however, that given the one-for-one relationship of our pound with sterling and the relative stability of the exchange rates of the continental EEC countries among themselves the existing system continues to provide a reasonably stable monetary environment for the bulk of our trade and payments. With regard to the international monetary system as a whole, I hope the international reviews now in train will lead to significant improvements.

Could the Minister say if the Governor of the Central Bank has reported back to him on the meetings of Central Bank Governors in Europe over the weekend and, if so, with what recommendation?

I heard on the radio at half past one that the Governor of the Central Bank was returning to Ireland and, as I came direct to the House, I had not an opportunity of seeing him.

He will be reporting to the Minister.

I am not aware if he has arrived in the country. I have only just arrived in the House.
