Vol. 267 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Victimisation of Young People.

26.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will establish a committee to examine and report to him if any employers victimise young people because of their social origins.

I outlined my views on discrimination, on whatever ground, when replying to the debate on the Estimate for my Department on the 28th June last. I referred to what I described as discrimination on the grounds of address. Young people from particular areas do not appear to get the same treatment in terms of interview time or possibilities of employment as young people from more socially acceptable areas. Social prejudice should not deprive any young person of gainful employment simply because an employer thinks that the area he comes from is not quite suitable. I would not be content to permit a situation such as that to continue, and if significant sections of people are shown to be affected the answer would seem to lie in legislation.

In my further examination of this matter I shall keep in mind the Deputy's suggestion about establishing a committee.
