Vol. 267 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Movement of Labour.

31.

asked the Minister for Labour the effect of the EEC regulations on the free movement of labour.

The effect in this country of the EEC regulations on the free movement of workers, which came into force on 1st January, 1973, has not been significant.

The National Manpower Service has received applications from 187 persons wishing to work in other EEC countries. So far as the service is aware only 15 of this number have received offers of employment.

This country, under a transitional arrangement with the EEC, retains its existing control on the admission of aliens to employment here up to 1st January, 1978. Accordingly, workers from EEC countries, other than Britain, may not enter into employment here except under a work permit. Such permits are normally issued only where suitable Irish workers are not available for the employment concerned.
