Vol. 267 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Edenderry (Offaly) Remedial Class.

101.

asked the Minister for Education if the remedial school class at Edenderry, County Offaly, will be continued after the summer holidays.

Mr. R. Burke

It is not the wish or intention of my Department that provision for remedial teaching of national school pupils in Edenderry should be discontinued.

My Department has informed the reverend manager of Edenderry Boys' national school that sanction would be given to the appointment by him of a fully-qualified and suitable teacher who would be engaged on a full-time basis in remedial teaching of pupils enrolled in that school and, also, of infant boys enrolled in the nearby Convent National School. The services of such a teacher would be fully recognised, and salary would, of course, be paid by the Department.

This arrangement would replace that which has obtained for some time past, whereby a person who is not qualified for recognition as a national teacher has been employed for remedial teaching in the boys' school on a part-time basis, her remuneration being provided voluntarily from local sources.
