Vol. 267 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Indictable Crimes.

104.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of indictable crimes that were committed in the greater Dublin area last year and in the first half of this year.

During the year ended 30th September, 1972, the number of indictable crimes which was reported or became known to the Garda in the Dublin Metropolitan Area was 23,254. The number for the six month period ended on 31st March, 1973, is estimated to be about 10,000.

Do I take it that there has been a sharp decline in the amount of crime in the city?

In indictable crime I am glad to say there has been a drop. Unfortunately it is not a sharp drop but it has been significant.

Does the Minister intend to discuss the matter with the city commission and the county council?

Yes. I have had a request to receive a deputation from both bodies and the date and place have been arranged.

The remaining Questions will appear on next Tuesday's Order Paper.
