asked the Taoiseach the weekly wages of forestry workers, road workers and adult agricultural workers in July, 1973, in the form of a reply of 21st July, 1971; and the relevant hours of work.
Written Answers. - Wages Statistics.
The following statement gives for each county the present (a) basic weekly time rate of wages paid to forestry workers for a 40-hour working week and (b) the minimum weekly rates payable to adult male agricultural workers under the Agricultural Wages (Minimum Rates) Order, 1973—these rates apply to a 44-hour week in the period November to February inclusive and to a 50-hour week during the remainder of the year. In the case of road labourers the returns from local authorities for 1st July, 1973, are not yet complete but in most cases the current rates will be £2.70 higher than the figures given in column (c) of the reply to Question No. 84 of 15th May, 1973. Local authorities now work on a 40-hour week basis.

asked the Minister for Lands the number of forestry workers (a) laid-off and (b) dismissed for reasons of redundancy in each county in 1973 to date; the forests where redundancy (1) has occurred because of a shortage of planting land, and (2) is likely to occur later this year for the same reason; and the steps being taken by his Department to increase forest employment, especially in the areas where alternative employment is not available.
Cavan): Particulars of (a) men laid off, (b) redundancies at State forests in 1973 to date are set out in the schedule appended.
It is not possible to state with precision what redundancies are likely to occur throughout the rest of the year but arrangements have been made for notifying the unions concerned in advance.
A variety of factors affect the levels of employment at State forests including among others the reserve of plantable land, improved working methods and technological advances. It may be taken, however, that in the cases listed shortage of a reserve of plantable land was a significant factor. While there is little immediate likelihood of a significant increase in direct employment in State forestry every effort is being made to acquire additional land to maintain employment and ample funds for land purchase are available.
