asked the Minister for Health the grants towards medical research from his Department in each of the past five years.

As the information is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle to circulate it with the Official Report. Following is the statement:

Grants made from the Hospitals' Trust Fund to the Medical Research Council of Ireland are made on the basis of calendar years and those to the Medico-Social Research Board on the basis of financial years. The amounts are as follows:

Medical Research CouncilCalendar year 1968

£109,900

,,,,1969

£117,700

,,,,1970

£124,600

,,,,1971

£138,155

1972

£147,800

Medical Social Research Board

Financial year 1968/69

,,,,1969/70

,,,,1970/71

£55,000

,,,,1971/72

The grants to these two bodies are being increased in the current year.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary state if the latest figures represent an increase or a decrease on last year?

As far as I can see, there is an increase.
