Vol. 267 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sewage Sludge.

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government if consideration has been given to the possible use of sewage sludge for land improvement; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

This question was the subject of a detailed examination by a technical committee set up under the aegis of my Department some years ago. It was then concluded that the contribution of the maximum possible quantity of sewage sludge to soil fertility would be quite insignificant and that it would be completely uneconomic to dispose of sewage in this way. While there has been no detailed examination of the subject recently, it is considered that the conclusions set out above are, in general, still valid.
