Vol. 267 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Traffic Congestion.

58.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any immediate plans to alleviate traffic congestion in Cork city; and, if so, whether he will detail the steps proposed to be taken.

This is a matter for Cork Corporation. I am aware that in recent years progress has been made with the implementation of a programme of traffic management schemes designed to secure the most effective use of the existing street system. Provision has been made in the current year's Road Fund grant allocations for the continuation of this programme. Provision has also been made for grants for improvement works to major city roads.

Proposals by the corporation with regard to long term measures recommended in the Cork traffic study are at present under examination in my Department.

59.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will indicate the plans for the alleviation of traffic congestion at Carrigaline on the main Cork-Crosshaven Road.

The preparation of such plans is the responsibility of Cork County Council. A scheme has been approved by my Department for the widening of Carrigaline Bridge as part of the works programme financed from last year's Road Fund grants. I have this year allocated to each council a block grant from the Road Fund for main and County roads and given the councils full discretion in the selection of schemes to be carried out with the aid of this grant.
