Vol. 267 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Motor Vehicle Regulations.

60.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he proposes to introduce in this country EEC proposals for motor vehicles involving signalling equipment, electrical points for trailers, interior fittings, safety glass and anti-theft devices.

The European Economic Community has adopted a general programme for the elimination of technical obstacles to trade in motor vehicles and their equipment. The Commission have prepared proposals under this programme for uniform standards of manufacture for the items of vehicle equipment mentioned in this question. The proposals have not yet been adopted by the Community and their provisions are, therefore, not in force in member States. Subject to directives on these items becoming effective, it would be necessary to ensure through regulations that vehicles which comply with their provisions are not prohibited from being used on roads in Ireland.
