Vol. 267 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Poultry Sales.

131.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will support the farming organisations in advocating the free sale of New York-dressed poultry in EEC countries; and if he will make every effort to secure an amendment of the EEC regulations which come into effect in 1975 prohibiting the sale of those birds; in view of the fact that at least 25 per cent of the chicken flock in the EEC countries is disposed of through fresh trade outlets such as the traditional turkey sales in this country.

I am prepared in the interests of our small turkey producers and processors to support proposals for retention of the New Yorkdressed poultry trade for so long as there is a significant consumer demand in this country for this type of bird. I have already pressed for amendment of the relevant EEC Poultry Health Directive in that regard, but I am not optimistic about the outcome in view of the overriding veterinary considerations.

When does the Minister expect a decision to be made?

I imagine it will be in September.
