Vol. 267 No. 12

Written Answers. - Army Gratuities.

220.

asked the Minister for Defence the basis on which army gratuities are paid.

Under the Defence Forces (Pensions) Schemes, a married officer retiring after 12 or more years' service is eligible for a gratuity in addition to retired pay. This gratuity is not payrelated but is based on rank and length of service. However, a married officer retiring within four years of the age limit for his rank receives an enhanced gratuity. The maximum gratuity which is equal to one and one-half years' pay is payable if retirement takes place within two years of the age limit.

A married non-commissioned officer or private discharged on pension is eligible for a gratuity of one week's pay, including additional pay if any, for each year of service subject to a maximum of 31 weeks' pay.

Officers and soliders who are not eligible for retired pay or pension because they have not the requisite service are eligible for gratuities at the rates laid down in the schemes.
