Vol. 267 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Plastic Manufacturing Industries.

89.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if a shortage of by-products is having an effect on plastic manufacturing industries in this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have had no representations from manufacturers of plastic products about difficulties as a result of the present shortage of raw material. Recent Press reports have indicated, however, that some Irish firms are being affected by this shortage.

The shortage of raw materials is a world-wide one, and I understand that it is unlikely to be remedied until there is a significant increase in the production of crude oils from which the raw materials in question are produced.

Is there any possibility that the State might assist the collection of waste plastic in order to recycle it?

I cannot give an informed answer to the Deputy but I think the idea is certainly worth looking at. It may be economic, it may not be. It depends on the size of the individual lumps that you would have to collect. I do not know the answer.

The Minister may be aware that certain conservation groups have started to campaign against plastic milk bottles. I am in favour of plastic milk bottles.

The Deputy is getting away from the question.

If the local authorities would agree to collect plastic containers I believe plastic products might be produced cheaper and it would give employment.

The Deputy is making a statement.
