Vol. 268 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foodstuffs Preservatives.

28.

asked the Minister for Health if he will examine and lay down firm regulations with regard to preservatives that might be used in foodstuffs for human consumption.

There are detailed controls on the presence of preservatives in food. The current controls are contained in the Health (Preservatives in Food) Regulations, 1972, and the Health (Preservatives in Food) (Amendment) Regulations, 1972. From July, 1974, these will be replaced by the Health (Preservatives in Food) Regulations, 1973, which will harmonise our controls with the relevant EEC directives.

Is the Minister aware that the EEC considered that this matter of preservatives and colouring in food has a major bearing on the environmental controls of the community?

They have considered all this. As I have told the Deputy, we are complying now with the EEC Agreement and directives in so far as preservatives are concerned.
