Vol. 268 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

2.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange to have at least two public telephone kiosks provided in the Kilbarrack/Foxfield area of Dublin.

Two additional telephone kiosks planned for this area are expected to be in service at Thornville Road and Kilbarrack Road by the end of the month.

3.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider the erection of a public telephone kiosk at Rochestown, County Cork.

Provision of a telephone kiosk at Rochestown cannot be favourably considered at present. There is a public call office telephone which is not extensively used in a local café.

Does the Minister think that a public telephone in a local café is adequate provision for the people in the neighbourhood? First, the café closes at an early hour and, secondly, for some reason or other the telephone may not be accessible to the local people.

I sympathise with the Deputy's exertions for his constituents, but it appears that the telephone in question is available from 8.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays and an emergency call is facilitated at any time outside those hours. In the circumstances, I am afraid I cannot change the decision.

4.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will agree to provide a public telephone kiosk for the residents of Arthur Griffith Park, Lucan, County Dublin.

I so agreed last month.

5.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that it commonly takes up to half-an-hour for telephone subscribers in County Kilkenny to "raise" the Waterford exchange; and if he will indicate the steps he is taking to increase the exchange staff to an adequate level.

I am aware that the answering service at Waterford exchange has not been satisfactory at times, particularly at night. The staffing of the exchange has now been strengthened and extra staff are in course of being recruited. I hope that these steps will lead to an improvement in the service and, if they do not, I am sure the Deputy, will raise the matter again.
