Vol. 268 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Certificate Examinations.

37.

asked the Minister for Education if he will indicate in respect of the 1973 leaving certificate examination the number of students with an honour Gaeilge grade and two other honour grades who have been awarded higher education grants.

Mr. R. Burke

Particulars of grants awarded under the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Act, 1968, on the basis of attainments at the leaving certificate examination, 1973, are not yet available from the local authorities.

38.

asked the Minister for Education the names of post-primary schools that entered pupils for the leaving certificate and the intermediate certificate examinations in 1973; and the number of candidates in respect of each such school who qualified for certificates in each of these examinations, the number who received A, B or C grades and the subject in which each obtained these grades.

Mr. R. Burke

In accordance with a long-standing agreement with school authorities my Department does not publish the results obtained by individual schools at the intermediate or leaving certificate examinations.

39.

asked the Minister for Education the number of students awarded grade C or higher grades in the higher level paper in the leaving certificate, 1973, in Irish and Mathematics.

Mr. R. Burke

The number of candidates who obtained grade C or a higher grade in Irish and Mathematics, higher level papers, in the leaving certificate examination, 1973, was 5,003 and 1,287, respectively.

40.

asked the Minister for Education why certain candidates in the intermediate certificate examination, 1973 who had achieved honours standard were first informed that they had failed.

Mr. R. Burke

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by my predecessor in this House on 8th November, 1972, on the general question of errors in the provisional results of the certificate examinations.

In issuing results to schools the authorities are informed that the results are provisional, and that they are subject to further check. The authorities are also asked to bring any apparent discrepancy in the results to the notice of the Department. In this way a number of errors is brought to light each year following the issue of the results.

In addition, a result may be altered under the terms of the Department's system of appeals. Following these procedures it was necessary to make a number of amendments in the provisional results of the intermediate certificate examination as issued to schools in September last.

Was this true in relation to the subject, art, particularly?

Mr. R. Burke

Yes, in respect of one school and I think the Deputy knows the school in question. It was unforgivable. We regret the mistake and will take steps to ensure that so far as possible such possibility will be eliminated in future.
