Vol. 268 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford School Strike.

61.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the prolonged technical school strike in two schools in County Wexford, in view of the hardship being caused to the pupils; and if he intends to intervene in this matter.

Mr. R. Burke

I understand that the strike is terminated and that the schools have been working normally from Tuesday, 16th October, 1973.

I know the strike has been terminated but I left the question on the Order Paper because I wanted to know why there was such a prolonged delay in settling the strike. We have had strikes in vocational schools in Wexford over quite a period. Can I have the Minister's assurance now that we will have the schools back to normal for at least a few years and that we will not have any more strikes in vocational schools?

Mr. R. Burke

The Deputy will realise, on reflection, that that is not a guarantee I can give. I am happy that the dispute in question was settled along the lines which were based on an opinion given by me. I am fairly happy that there will not be any further trouble in the County Wexford area. I would prefer not to say anything further about it at this stage other than I am happy that the situation has reached the stage it has.
