Vol. 268 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - House Prices.

3.

asked the Minister for Local Government the average price of new houses for which loans have been advanced by all agencies in Cork, Dublin, Limerick, Waterford and Galway; and the average price of new houses for each of these areas during the period 1st July, 1972, to 30th September, 1972, and the corresponding period in 1973.

The average gross prices of new houses in Cork, Dublin, Limerick, Waterford and Galway for which loans were approved by the three principal lending agencies in the quarter ended 30th September, 1972, were £6,029, £6,935, £5,949, £5,820 and £6,948 respectively.

Similar information for the quarter ended 30th September, 1973, is not yet available.

Would the Minister not consider putting a ceiling on the price of these houses in view of the colossal profit made by certain building contractors, which has been shown in a local paper recently? I should like the Minister to look into the matter.

I am calling Question No. 4.
