Vol. 268 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Feed Supplement.

144.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether he has any advice to offer farmers about the use of urea as a feed supplement.

Urea can be usefully incorporated in certain types of animal feeds but should not be fed to pigs, poultry or calves under three months of age.

It can be effectively utilised only if fed in conjunction with a readily available source of energy such as barley. It should not be fed in conjunction with other foods such as grass, silage and greens which are already high in simple nitrogen compounds.

Where farmers wish to supplement other feeding stuffs with urea they should consult their local advisory officer as to how this can best and most economically be done.
