Vol. 268 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pharmaceutical Freeze-Drying.

40.

asked the Minister for Health if he is of the opinion that freeze-drying methods have advantages over other drying methods for pharmaceutical purposes; and if he will introduce regulations in this regard.

I am advised that while the freeze-drying method, which is relatively a very expensive one, has advantages in the production of certain medical preparations, it is not necessary for the manufacture of all such preparations. The National Drugs Advisory Board take the necessity for any particular method of manufacture into account in assessing proposals for the marketing of new or reformulated drugs. In the circumstances, I do not consider that it is necessary to make regulations relating specifically to freeze-drying in the manufacture of drugs.
