Vol. 268 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Military Barracks.

54.

asked the Minister for Defence the progress, if any, that has been made regarding the construction of a new military barracks.

Priority is being given to improving accommodation at military posts in the Border area and the necessary preparatory work for the erection of a new military barracks at Monaghan is about to commence.

Apart from that, consideration of the question of providing a modern military barracks, which would replace one of the older existing barracks, is progressing.

Would the Minister be prepared to say that the location of this new military barracks will be in the region of Gormanston?

I am not prepared to say that at this point in time. I am prepared to say that Gormanston is certainly on the short list.

I am surprised that the Minister is not prepared to say that Gormanston will get the new barracks because arrangements have been made to provide extra piping to supply water to Gormanston so that it will be in a position to take the new barracks.

We are having a statement from the Deputy.

My position in that matter is that I cannot, at this moment, announce Gormanston as the site. I have given the House the very best information I can, namely, that it is on the short list.
