asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if there has been any progress in regard to the harmonisation of telecommunications within the EEC.

EEC countries have been seeking progress in the direction mentioned by the Deputy within the broader framework of CEPT, the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunication Administrations, which was set up in 1959 with the object, inter alia, of strengthening the relations between member administrations and of harmonising and improving their administrative and technical services. Towards these ends a number of recommendations have been adopted relating to such matters as the harmonisation in certain respects of telephone, telegraph and telex charges between member-administrations and, in the technical field, standardisation of telephone signalling, ship radio et cetera facilities.
