Vol. 268 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trading Standards Officers.

39.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will appoint local trading standards officers throughout the State.

I take it the Deputy has in mind a body of inspecting and complaints officers to look after consumers. The existing weights and measures officers throughout the country are already doing this in relation to weights and measures, and those in Dublin are also authorised to do enforcement work under the Merchandise Marks Acts. I recognise the need for up-dating our enforcement arrangements, but I propose to await the across-the-board report on consumer protection from the new National Consumer Advisory Council, which I have asked to take over the task from the National Prices Commission, before taking final decisions in the matter.
