Vol. 269 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mandatory Prison Sentences.

18.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider providing for mandatory prison sentences on persons convicted of offences in which firearms are used.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Dáil Question No. 47 of 10th May, 1973.

I did not hear the reply.

The Chair appreciates the Deputy's difficulty. If the Deputy insists, perhaps the Minister would repeat the reply.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Dáil Question No. 47 of 10th May, 1973.

This is a matter on which the Minister has done nothing since I asked him about it before.

I considered providing for mandatory prison sentences. If the Deputy looks back to the question he asked me in May last, he will see that I told him that the law already provides for imprisonment without the option of a fine in cases of persons convicted of certain offences in relation to firearms. I am merely referring the Deputy back to his question of May last. My reply has not changed. There is no need for change.
