Vol. 270 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alkyl-Mercury Compounds.

11.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will take steps to eliminate the use of alkyl-mercury compounds in agriculture.

I am advised that alkyl-mercury compounds are used here almost exclusively in the manufacture of seed dressings and that the quantity in each dressing is so small that it should not present any hazard to human or animal life. As these products play a valuable role in the control of cereal crop diseases it is not proposed to ban their use.
