Vol. 270 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Pig Fattening Unit.

39.

Mrs. Hogan O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if any provision has been made by his Department to assist Ballyshrule pig fattening unit, County Galway, to improve a road leading to the unit, thus enabling over 500 members to use this co-operative unit for the proper farming economy of this area.

A grant under the farm building scheme at the maximum rate was paid in 1970 to the East Galway Co-operative Society Ltd., for a road within their agriculture holding.

An extension by the society of their large-scale pig fattening unit has been approved for grant by my Department, but no specific application has been received from the society for a grant for improvement of a road leading to the unit.

Has the Minister for Local Government been in consultation with the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries in connection with this road? When I asked the Minister for Local Government about this road some time ago I was informed that he would consult with the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries before giving his recommendation to the local authority. To date the local authority have not received any recommendation.

I do not recall having consultation with the Minister for Local Government about this matter. It is possible that he was speaking to me about it but, as is stated in my reply, we have not received an application for a grant.

Mr. Kitt

Would the Minister consult the Minister for Local Government and find out if a unanimous proposal from Galway County Council has gone forward to spend money on this road under a local improvement scheme? The funds are there and all that is needed is the sanction of the Minister.
